In industrial engineering, one of the most hazardous threats to pipelines is the phenomenon known as water hammer, which is a sudden increase in pressure within the pipes. This pressure surge can cause significant damage to equipment, leading to costly repairs, financial losses, and in some cases, environmental hazards. To prevent these issues, surge vessels are installed. These devices are designed to absorb pressure spikes and ensure the safe operation of systems. 

What is Water Hammer? 

Water hammer occurs when a moving fluid inside a pipeline is abruptly stopped or its velocity is suddenly changed. This can happen, for example, when a valve is closed too quickly or when a pump shuts down unexpectedly. These sudden changes in flow create pressure waves that travel through the pipe, generating spikes that can damage the pipeline’s structure, valves, and connections. 

How Do Surge Vessels Work? 

Surge vessels (also known as expansion tanks) are engineered to absorb and reduce these pressure waves. Inside the vessel is an air or gas chamber that acts as a cushion. When pressure increases in the pipeline, the liquid is pushed into the vessel, compressing the air or gas. This way, surge vessels dampen the pressure wave, minimizing potential damage to the system.

The installation of surge vessels in pipelines offers multiple advantages: 

  1. Infrastructure protection: They prevent damage to pipes, pumps, and valves, increasing the longevity of the system.

  • Petrochemical sector: Surge vessels protect pipelines carrying oils and gases from sudden pressure spikes. 
  • Water supply systems: They are employed to manage potable water distribution and safeguard municipal water networks from structural damage. 
  • Power plants: In water-cooled systems, surge vessels help stabilize pressure, ensuring continuous and safe operation. 

In each of these contexts, the primary role of surge vessels is to maintain the integrity of infrastructure, prevent damage, and ensure the continuous operation of industrial systems.
